It was the same thing if the body was rundown. My parents never asked me to think about what bug I picked up. We know that all kids get exposed to bugs, but it was a question of why my body got rundown. Why did my body become more susceptible to those bugs or the germs at school than it was at home? It is true that we live in a polluted part of the world, even though we try to live a healthy lifestyle. Even though I was living well, it was still interesting because I started developing severe irritative issues after I got into professional practice. I wondered, “What am I missing?” and “Do I have food sensitivity?” I have written a publication on toxicity and I have written a bunch of articles on my website as well. Toxicity is real. It is something we have to face in North America because it is in the environment. It is in some foods. It is in the soil. The organic food movement has existed because of the concern of accumulative toxicity over someone’s lifetime

In the last 10 to 15 years, I think, detoxification became more important to me. What does that mean? The philosophy of saying the body was designed to function properly is what brought it back down. The philosophy as a Chiropractor was always anchored in the idea that if we distort the physical structure of the body that that can distort the functioning of the body. I realized that there can be interference with the body. Even if we get in the right nutrition, there can be chemical stressors. Nowadays, when people want to conquer their health challenges, they have to not just look at what they need to get into the body, but also what they need to get out. What do they need to remove and eliminate to be safe? Is that answering your question?

You are correct. The liver can be stressed. Glutathione can get rundown and your detoxification abilities can become rundown and stressed. Your body has a limited ability to clear pollutants out of it, when it does. The body should be in a state of rest and relaxation on a daily basis. The basic things people can do are get lots of water, lots of fiber, lots of fresh air, and lots of phytonutrients from vegetables. When people consume raw foods both plant and animal form, it is definitely a popular thing, but when they consume raw eggs, it is not as popular. Whole food, Glutathione, or in raw vegetables are the actual top sources. That is your body’s number oneAntioxidant that contributes to, you know, cleaning out those cells, getting rid of the environmental pollutants that shouldn’t be in there

When we get those in the body, they trap materials that shouldn’t be there, because they are magnets. They can get it through the body. People spend a week in the rainforest and they feel great, that is where you hear about them. They are inhaling the earth and they are probably getting it in through some of their food. We wash every last fruit and vegetable. Everything should be perfectly clean. I am not suggesting that anyone has food from un-hygiene sources but at the same time, eating some of the elements from the earth can help cleanse the body and get the vitamins in

I think people understand that those are basic things that people can do and that they are respecting the way the body was designed to operate. I think that it is so bad that people spend so much time indoors, and I am constantly looking for a way to get outdoors, you know. I feel that I operate better. I live in a part of the world that is fairly warm. I am in Canada. I know that when I am outside, I get fresh air, I get the benefits of the sun, and I also get the benefits of the sun’s UVB rays which help my immune system and many other functions

Some of the products we created are personal care products that get into the body. I was severely toxic with mercury and my level was five times higher than what was considered acceptable for my age. My belief is that our body’s ability to remove toxins from our body becomes very stressed because we’re no longer dealing with the small amount of toxicity from mushrooms in the environment. I would say that there are lifestyle choices that people want to be able to make which is minimizing the chemicals in their life. I know that those who might argue against the word chemicals will say that everything is chemical. I understand but go back to the philosophy of how the body was designed to operate. Babies and soothers made of petrochemicals are what were designed to be, you know, chew on. The answer is no. This is something that humans did

BJ: It is amazing. It is by two genius guys in Canada, and you can see the realities of it. The modern industrialized society has made it more difficult for chemicals to be released into the air, water, and food. It is a legitimate concern. When I started researching this, I was so shocked that they found plastic under 30 feet of ice on the polar ice caps, that it sent chills down my spine. I am with you on that, the earth is saturated with these chemicals that are endocrine mimickers and they have horrible effects on the body. I think it is a big problem. We don’t live in a world that is free of toxins. Sometimes we have to be a little more proactive, like when we spend more time getting vitamins D or free time outside, but there are things that are wonderful and free. I would love to hear more about your story. How did you recover from heavy metal poisoning?

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, I had lab work done for an integrated practitioners from the United States, so I was working with them, and I think there is a point where people come. I hope that my biggest message for anyone and everyone is always that when you are struggling in your health, never give up on the principle of what you are saying, but sometimes reexamine the application or the practice of it. The principle is that the body is designed to heal itself, and it just needs no interference. That doesn’t come to speak as you snap your fingers, you know?

You might think, “Okay, well, I have done what I can to cleanse myself.” Did you take that many layers further? In some cases, they need to take it many layers further and get some proper testing done. Doctor’s Data is the leading company in the United States that doctors turn to to order urine toxic metals tests. I wanted people to know what I went through so I put this in my eBook. I had to take a supplement while I was doing the toxic metal testing, but I was also tested for all of my other toxic metals. I had to do something. We looked at my mom’s test and it showed that she was high in mercury, so that’s interesting. The same metals, the same concentrations, were also high in my mom, even though the 17 levels that showed up high in me were not the same. The vitalistic philosophy says that the body is more than just a collection of parts, that there is a life force and a life energy. And you know what? I can tell you that there are many mechanistic scientists who have gone down this path, and the more they research, the more they realize that their stuff is not going to be able to determine about the body. There is a philosophy of vitalism which recognizes the body’s ability to heal. This is what people like Andrew Weil and Deepak Chopra have said about it for a long time. It is well-accepted in the vitalistic sector of medicine, and there have been books written on this for over 30 years

I never questioned my body’s ability to heal itself. I knew it would take time. I always tell people that if the body were to heal itself, it would take two things. It takes time and it doesn’t interfere. ” If I continued to consume a lot of high mercury fish, that would probably not help me, because I would be interfering with my body. I have to eliminate any interference that is present, and just let the body heal itself. I did a lot of supplements through those years. There weren’t as many polished detox kits back then. I did a lot of Clarifying agents, so back then it was on the internet, like on the internet and the internet. Sometimes they were by prescription, but at other times they were in supplements. I will say this again, my mom really, you know, when she doesn’t like taking vitamins

My mom is so hardcore that she says, “Hey, wait a second, you know, vitamins are outside and I’m supposed to get my nutrition from my food.” I agree with her 100%. She has to take vitamins because a lot of the foods are not giving her enough vitamins. She was wondering why she had to take vitamins and supplements to get rid of mercury and heavy metals. That is more of an “outside-in” model, so that is what you are talking about. Plastic accumulates in the body that is outside-in

I did a lot of supplements or hacking. I have never called it that but it is a biohack. It was possible to take certain supplements back then to bind up and trap mercury, and get it out of my system. It was more difficult back then. I think there are more advanced protocols. I went in and went on a very strict diet back then, and we now call it a more of a ketogenic diet. I wanted to make sure my body had the best ability to heal and I knew it couldn’t have any inflammation, so I had to reduce sugar and anything that turned into sugar

I did that for about a year and a half. I re-tested my heavy metals and found that I had cleared most of the mercury in my system. The most important thing is that people will do a follow-up test with anything, whether it is a food sensitivity, or their weight, or a level of toxicity. It is important that you retest the same way. I meet people who have done a test but don’t redo it. They have a food sensitivity to carrots. They eliminate carrots for a while. They never retest themselves to see if they can do those things again

The person is named Katie. Yeah. I like that. You mentioned that you have heavy metals and that you have seen the same problems in your mom, so I wanted to highlight that. There is research that shows heavy metals being passed on from mother to child

I know that we always do the best we can, and there are things you can do even if you have a baby and have high levels of these things in your body. If you are in the preconception phase, that is a great thing to do

BJ: I think we are all on the same page when we talk about getting food from your indigenous sources. That is for sure. I have never felt that there is a single diet for everyone. Some people will do better on more sugar and some people will do better on more fat. You have to look at a lot of factors, such as genetics, how you do, and so on. The problem is this even when we look at higher sugar foods. I am not from a part of the world where pineapple grows year-round. I would have to travel to taste pineapple

My genetics are more likely to thrive on your northern foods, root vegetables, nuts, seeds, animal products. I wrote about this on my website, and I think that the problem is not the amount of Fructose in a fruit, but the way it is grown. The problem is when we take out any of these things. I think it is important that we don’t demonize sugar, so my main thing right now is getting people back to whole foods. We use corn as a source of fructose. We have high-fructose corn syrup. There is nothing to say about it. The sugar industry hid information from the public in the 1960s. This has been a common knowledge. We know that sugar is addictive. We call it the sweet spot because the food industry uses sugar. It creates a spot where you want more of the food because it tastes so good. Premium Plus are the little soda crackers that are called in Canada, and a lot of people don’t know. Even though they don’t say there’s any sugar in the crackers, you are dealing with sugar once you start to digest the white flour. It breaks down quickly

Some people look at it and say, “Oh, it’s 40 grams of carbs, but there’s no sugar.” It is sugar when you start drooling on it. People have to be careful with anything that is refined. I am not the biggest fan of corn, and I look at sugar when it comes, so I think of it when I think of corn. We could talk about that again. If you have a whole orange, for example, it might help someone feel more satisfied, because you are consuming high fructose corn syrup or fructose from a fruit. It might help them fill up because there are lots of things in there. We have not just taken out the sugar and said that orange juice is never going to fill someone up

I didn’t pay much attention to nutrition when I was in school. I hadn’t gone through my own health challenges yet so I wasn’t paying as much attention as I should have. My professor said that if you looked at that glass of orange juice, you would never have four to eight oranges. If you take whole foods and extract the vitamins out of them, it creates problems because we are not designed to do that, and we would like sugar for instance

I will not get off the sugar topic because I find the same problem. I have found in the last number of years that we need more of the stuff. Adding a shake with a bit of oatmeal and adding a bit of a shake with a bit of a shake. Well, you know, here, and you know, how is that any better than we are getting the same amount of sugar from oranges and peas, but not a whole food? I have had whole food and meal replacements when I am exercising more because I don’t want my body to get into a deficit of calories. I wouldn’t say that’s being a hypocrite. I would say that it is a bit more of a hack. I have tried to look for meal replacements and shakes that are still whole food balanced, and that are also good for me because I run a lot and I need tons of calories before I run

It is not possible to look at a sustainable model of the earth like that. The thing that I think is crazy is the keto diet. Everybody is trying to get fat left, right, and center, and they are all doing it, and they are all trying to get fat added into smoothies and so forth. I think you should look at our ancestral history, no one in our family ever ate the percentages of fat that a lot of people do on a high fat diet. It is therapeutic for some people, but let’s just get back to eating real whole foods. There is a difference between a therapeutic diet and just living the way we are designed to live

I think the biggest thing for people is not to have sugar in the house, because you will find a way to use it. You will be bombarded when you go to a restaurant because they are using sugar. You can ask as much as you want, but I want to know what the ingredients are. I don’t feel I get a straight answer. It is the best thing to look at what you do at home when you are trying to make good choices for your family. It’s best to start by not having it in the house. If people are really hooked on sweet stuff, there are other options and we will use my website, which is Dr. Hardick.com. I love her very much. She has worked hard for the last number of years to help us work out all the recipes using things like dates and banana purees and, yes, the plant-based sweetener, stevia. There are sugar alcohol sweeteners that can work on a limited basis that don’t cost a lot. They are not whole foods but people can use things like erythritol and xylitol if they really, really, really need that birthday cake. They won’t have the same impact on blood sugar as a true sugar

The problem is that they are addicted to it and have it all the time. When we lick the sugar habit, it makes us feel like garbage, and people realize that they feel like garbage when they consume it. I have a relationship with sugar

I think you answered it perfectly, because it was just don’t have the sugar in the house. I get an objection from people that it is not balanced to raise your kids with a severe position on food and then they want to go out and eat it. I think that is the key, is that we are responsible for what we serve in our homes and what we put on the table for our kids. We don’t have to serve sugar here. I am the same person that we don’t do that. If they eat a bite of cake at a party, it won’t ruin all that work at home, and that also gives them a balance. We are not just feeding them at home, but they were able to try those things

I have seen the same thing when I have fasted and ketosis

There are benefits to being in ketosis, like cancer research and longevity, and I have seen studies that show the benefits of drinking coconut oil or MCT oil. It goes in line with a lot of vegetables when it happens in natural populations. It was like green vegetables, tons and tons of green vegetables which are also estrogen binders, which help with hormone production. They have more than one benefit. I do go into ketosis quite often, but I only eat healthy sources of fat and eat lots of green veggies, moderate amounts of protein and drink lots of water, and that is when I feel great

I think that the research is showing that nothing works for everyone, like you said, and that is what the true answers are. I noticed that being in ketosis all the time is not good for you, and that is the answer. I would eventually start feeling bad if I stayed in ketosis too long. I think the answer is to be ketosis sometimes but then spike your carbs from natural sources and eat a couple of sweet potatoes, and not like let the body adjust to it. I am curious about your take on sugar, and getting in and out of ketosis, but I like what you say about it

Sometimes, when you have a newborn baby, you know, you have to feed it, and then it’s time to sleep. I think that if women want to try and fast, there are a few changes to be made. I say, “Okay, maybe do a fast but not quite as long.” If your body wasn’t designed to be a hunter-gatherer, then you should fast from sundown to 10:00 in the morning. You know what I mean? It doesn’t have to be after 6 pm. The other snacks you can eat are pure fats. What would that be? You know, pure coconut and pure avocados. You want to avoid things that can cause a spike in blood sugar

Listening to your body is important. You know what I mean? People need to listen to their body and see how they do, if they give themselves a chance, because there are some little hacks here. Sometimes people’s self-understanding of whether or not they should have more or less sugar or whether or not they should fast is confused because the body is dealing with so much stimuli from the environment. We get so many social signals telling us that we are hungry, we are not sleeping enough, and we have too much television going on. Turn off the television. You are probably not hungry. Turn off the television. It is the television that tells you that you are hungry

The body was designed to be able to go through periods without food. The body cannot stay in that state of ketosis through eating. It doesn’t have to be through supplements. There are a number of arguments that argue that some restriction on calories can help prolong life. I don’t like the idea of restriction on calories because we have low calories at every meal. One of the arguments for fasting is that you should put your three meals a day into one or two, because it is high fat foods. I have never seen anyone do that

You are going to be limiting some calories, and you are going to be focusing more on when you eat not what you eat. I would focus on getting in good quality but during a tighter window. It is different for everyone and there is still a lot of research to be done. I don’t know if there’s a perfect way to fast. I was talking about intermittent fasts at a conference last year and a gentleman said to me, “You know, I think I have figured it out.” I think the window for fast is 36 hours. I asked, “please don’t tell me that.” I was starting and I was getting good at 16 hours.

It makes sense because the body was designed to go without food. We have so many social cues telling us that we need to eat all the time, and that really screws with our brain, but there is heavy marketing dollars behind that stuff. Your body is supposed to respond when you see colors, red and blue, and all that, to get your blood pressure going. I urge people to monitor how they do individually and recognize that there is biological diversity

You are growing a human. I have been experimenting with it and I think it works for women because we all fast while sleeping. Don’t try to just fast for days on end, just extend the window a little bit. I stop eating after 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. I feel better when I don’t eat at night. It is different for everyone, and that is what has worked well for me. You mentioned the restriction on calories. The research is very strong on that, like we know that if you restrict calories you live longer and have less cancer risk. I think your point is correct that there are two ways to do that. You could either eat less or less often

I think it is easier to stop eating at night if you reduce calories. Moms are busy at night. I can work on stuff but it is one less thing I have to do and I think you are right that it is different for everyone

I don’t agree with the comment that Dr. Hardwick made about his mother potentially doing something wrong with her lifestyle. I have seen heroin users give birth to babies with no problems, and friends who are fit and healthy have C-sections. As the interview continues, hope he gets to that. healthy people get sick
